Indiana State Troopers worked a six vehicle crash on I-65 NB at the 83.5 mm. (near the Johnson/Shelby County line) that killed a Franklin woman Saturday afternoon.

Preliminary investigation revealed that northbound I-65 traffic had slowed at the 83.5 mm, possibly due to an earlier vehicle slide off. A 2000 International straight truck driven by Hector Avila, 49, of Indianapolis, IN. failed to negotiate the slowed traffic and ran into the rear of a 2005 Chrysler, driven by Dona Mann, 76, of Franklin, IN. The Chrysler was shoved into another vehicle ahead of it. Six vehicles ultimately ended up in the accordion type crash.

Availa was transported to Wishard Hospital with back, neck and chest pain. Mann was pronounced dead at the scene by the Johnson County Coroner's Office.

Two adults and three children from a van involved in the crash were transported to Johnson County Memorial Hospital with complaints of pain, bruising and scratches from the seatbelts and airbags. Two other adults from another vehicle were transported to Johnson County Memorial Hospital, treated and released. None of the injuries were considered life threatening.
Two other vehicles involved did not receive much damage and were driven from the scene by the drivers. Neither driver received any injuries.

Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected to be a contributing factor in the crash.

NB I-65 was closed at the 83.5 mm for approximately two hours while investigators worked the crash and cleaned up the wreckage.

The investigation is continuing and no charges have been filed at this time.
