One dead in Madison County crash on State Road 37

One person is dead and a man was injured Tuesday morning in a head-on crash near County Road 900 North south of Elwood on State Road 37.

It happened just before 9:00 am Tuesday.

According to the Madison County Sheriff's Department, a Volkswagen was headed north on SR 37 when the driver crossed the center line into the southbound lane, striking a large box truck head-on.

The driver of the passenger car was pinned in the wreckage and pronounced dead at the scene. Police are working on notifying the driver's relatives.

The driver of the 2011 Freightliner, Christopher Therr, 37, was taken by ambulance to Mercy-St. Vincent Hospital in Elwood. There is no word on his condition.

The box truck wound up on its side in a ditch and it took several hours before crews were able to set it back on all four wheels. The truck's fuel tank was punctured and Madison County Hazmat was on the scene.

State Road 37 was still closed in the area as of 2:00 pm.

Assisting at the scene; Pipecreek Fire Deparatment, Elwood Fire and EMS, Indiana State Police, Elwood Police Department and Madison County Emergency Management.

The Madison County Corner will release the name of the person who died once the family has been notified.

The Madison County Sheriff's Department Accident Team is still investigating.
