One dead and three injured in Howard County crash

The driver of an SUV trying to avoid a deer early Sunday morning crashed into a tree killing one passenger and injuring three others.

Eddie Taylor, 39, of Marion was westbound on State Road 22 around 1 a.m. when he lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway.
According to witnesses a vehicle traveling in front of the SUV slowed after striking a deer. Witnesses observed the SUV brake and make an attempt to avoid the injured deer. Taylor's vehicle left the roadway where it began to slide sideways before crashing into a tree.

The vehicle that struck the deer sustained minor damage. The occupants stopped after the accident to assist.

Taylor had four occupants besides himself in the SUV. Two were airlifted to Lutheran Hospital, Ft. Wayne. One was taken to a local hospital and the rear passenger occupant, 37-year-old Adam D. Oaks, of Marion, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Taylor submitted to a portable breath test which indicated no signs of intoxication.
