Officers weapon discharges during struggle with suspect

A Bloomington police officer's gun fired during a struggle with an assault suspect Thursday.

Officer Brett Rorem followed the vehicle of the suspect wanted for assaulting a deputy around 6 p.m. Thursday. The officer followed the vehicle to the 6700 block of E. Gross Road, where the suspect, later identified as Cody D. Waldrip, fled into a wooded area.

Rorem pursued Waldrip into the woods, where he was attacked by the suspect. The officer drew his baton and a struggle ensued. Waldrip then tried to disarm the officer by reaching for Rorem's weapon and it discharged.

No one was injured when the weapon fired.

Waldrip was eventually taken into custody. Rorem was treated and released for minor injuries.

Investigators are still looking into the circumstances related to the discharged weapon.
