Officer involved in shooting on west side

A police pursuit led to an officer-involved shooting shortly after midnight Wednesday on the west side of Indianapolis.

IMPD spokesman Kendale Adams said the police pursuit started just before midnight with a traffic stop at Holt Road and Troy Avenue.  The dark-colored extended cab pickup took off, but was cornered by police in the 4300 block of West Bradbury Avenue, in the parking lot behind Wayne Twp. Fire Station 81.

That's where, according to Adams, a man got out of the pickup and fired at officers. IMPD officers returned fire. The suspect was wounded in the exchange, and taken to Eskenazi Hospital in critical condition.

Two other people in the pickup have been detained - a man and a woman - but police have not revealed if either face charges.

No officers were injured, but Adams said a police car was stuck by gunfire.

IMPD's Critical Incident Response Team and Internal Affairs will investigate the incident independently, which is standard in such cases, Adams said.

The three officers involved will be offered counseling and go on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
