NICU doctors, former patients reunite for day of fun

A heartwarming reunion Saturday between more than 2,000 families and the people who provided life-saving treatment for their children.

Former patients and their parents reconnected with hospital staff who cared for them in the St. Vincent Newborn Intensive Care Unit.

The annual event at Zionsville Lions Park gives families and doctors a chance to catch up and celebrate the progress they've made.

"The goal is really just to give our nurses and doctors and all the staff in the NICU and the families we've cared for an opportunity to get back together and renew old acquaintances and catch up over the years, and for us to see how the children we've cared for have progressed over time," explained Dr. Robert Jansen with St. Vincent Women's Hospital.

"There's not only babies here but toddlers and kids that are older, and it's kind of nice to see those kids doing so well," added Allison Steele, the mother of a former NICU patient.

Besides visiting with doctors, children also enjoyed pony rides, face painting and other activities during the reunion.
