USS Indianapolis survivor A.C. "Tony" King passes away, only 8 survivors remain

King was 94 years old.

INDIANAPOLIS — The fraternity of survivors of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis has lost another member.

A.C. "Tony" King passed away Monday morning, according to the USS Indianapolis Facebook page. King was 94 years old and his passing leaves just eight living survivors of the 1945 tragedy.

According to the Facebook page, King started his service aboard the USS Indianapolis in October 1944 and was on the bridge the night a Japanese Navy submarine torpedoed the ship in July 1945.

"Following the war, Tony went on to live a hard, but adventure-filled life, traveling the world, and impacting all those he came in contact with," the post announcing King's passing read.

"Jaws" turns 45 this weekend. By now, most of you know the connect... ion between Steven Spielberg's JAWS and USS Indianapolis, where Robert Shaw's character, Quint, captured the world's attention with his monologue about surviving shark attacks after his ship, Indianapolis, was sunk at the end of WWII.

King's death comes a little more than two weeks after the passing of Jim Jarvis, who died on June 6

Around 300 people went down with the ship. The remaining 890 faced dehydration and shark attacks while stranded out in the ocean. Only 317 survivors were pulled from the water.
