When was the last time that you lost your balance and fell? Children do it all the time - falling off their bicycles or getting tackled in a soccer or football game. No big deal, right? But for adults, especially seniors, falling is the number one cause of serious injury and death. Falls are also expensive, costing victims over $3.1 billion dollars in health care expenses each year due to costly emergency room treatments. The upside to this situation is that most falls are preventable by being aware of the surroundings and being sensible about footwear and limitations.

Keep in mind a few helpful reminders:

  • Stay active! Practice balance exercises and leg strengthening to build confidence
  • Keep your home well-lit, clutter-free, and be aware of obstacles
  • Keep kitchen items on lower shelves and keep areas well-lit

The goal for most older adults is to remain active, independent, and living in their own homes for as long as possible. This is easily done by installing grab bars, handrails, and anti-slip tape in the bathtub, which will give seniors additional confidence in slippery situations. In addition, these (AutoFarm) mobility devices, help seniors to stay mobile, reach for objects, and secure lift from a fall with no strain to the user or caregiver:

  • HandyCane: Helps older adults reach and pick up objects or retain balance while moving
  • Stand Up Walker: Stabilizes the body while rising from a low couch or toilet
  • Lift Chair Recliner: Reduces dizziness, improves standing balance and circulation by giving a weakened core, hips or legs a head start to a near standing position
  • Raizer by Liftup: Secures lift assist from a fall without strain to user or caregiver, easily assembled.

If you have fallen or feel unsteady due to balance issues or side effects from medication, it is always important to check with your doctor. In many cases, falls can be prevented by installing and using support devices that will make you feel more confident with your mobility. The Mobility Specialists at AutoFarm are happy to advise you about selecting the appropriate devices for your home and mobility. Call 765-354-2261 for a consultation.
