Honor ride held to mourn groom killed at bachelor party

Christopher Smith saw someone get pistol-whipped during an argument over by the bar.

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHR) — A man celebrating at his bachelor party in Indianapolis was killed trying to stop a man with a gun.

It happened Friday, Nov. 29 at Jakes Pub, 1280 West Southport Road, which is just east of Bluff Road.

Christopher Smith saw someone get pistol-whipped during an argument over by the bar.

The local pastor rushed the man with the gun and was shot and killed.

"I was just thinking there is no way that this can be real. Not Chris. I mean, he is a man of God, but then when I heard the story and I heard what had happened, it made more sense," said Shanon Singer-Mann, the sister of Smith's fiancée.

Smith had been set to get married on Dec. 14.

"Everything was already booked and paid for. The wedding, the honeymoon, everything. My sister had already bought a dress. And on Saturday we were going to celebrate her bachelorette party and instead she is planning a funeral," Singer-Mann said.

Metro Police made an arrest in the case on Wednesday.

An honor ride was held in Smith's memory Wednesday night.

Dozens of tow-truck drivers, motorcyclists and others gathered along South East Street to pay respects.

His family said they were thankful for the big show of support.

"It meant the world to me. This is what he deserves," said Singer-Mann. "This is the light that he always wanted everybody to see and it's going to go so much further than this, I just know it."

According to Smith's obituary, his fiancée and he had been in a "loving relationship for 12 years."

Funeral arrangements will take place Friday, Dec. 6 from 5-7 p.m. in Lauck & Veldhof Funeral & Cremation in Indianapolis, followed by a service celebrating his life.
