Vincennes - The New Year will begin with another big splat in Vincennes next week as the southern Indiana city's watermelon drop returns for a second time to usher in 2010.

The unusual New Year's Eve spectacle pays homage to the area's melon-growing prowess.

Next Thursday night, as a crowd counts down the final seconds of 2009, an 18-foot, 500-pound steel-and-foam watermelon will rise into the air over Riverfront Pavilion.

At the stroke of midnight, 10 watermelons grown in Knox County will plunge 100 feet and produce a colorful splat while fireworks mark 2010's arrival.

Since last year's watermelon drop, the 18-foot foam watermelon has become a star attraction in Vincennes, joining the town's July 4th and Christmas parades.
