New Westfield sports complex makes weekend debut
A new state-of-the-art sports complex in Westfield attracted international attention Sunday night.
The city's Grand Park Sports Campus hosted a soccer tournament this weekend as one of its debut events. Efforts to build the 400-acre complex have been in the works since 2010.
City leaders are hoping to establish Westfield as the amateur sports capital of the country and bring new business to the area.
"As we grow, the hospitality related industries - the hotels, the restaurants, the shopping, the entertainment - will grow around the perimeter of this park," said Mayor Andy Cook (R). "Our guests will spend about $137 per person, per day. That will shift through the Indiana economy."
Some of the people visiting the complex Sunday came from as far away as Texas and even Canada.
