A new gym in downtown Indianapolis is part of a new campaign to bring fitness and healthy living to the center of the city.

Kids joined project leaders this morning as they broke ground on the CityWay YMCA on the corner of Delaware and South Streets.

The new 87,000-square-foot facility will feature two indoor pools, three full-sized gyms and an elevated running track.

It will also include a few less-common amenities like green roof space for outdoor classes and an instructional kitchen to help members learn how to prepare nutritious meals.

"We provide an opportunity for families to become stronger, for kids to learn life skills like teamwork, compassion, friendly competition, swimming, philanthropy, the list goes on and on," said Liz O'Farrell with the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis.

The "Y" still needs $5 million to cover the cost of the project.

It's slated to open by the end of next year.
