Netanyahu says Israel will hit Hamas hard
Israel suffered its first fatality Tuesday in its eight day conflict with Palestinians in Gaza.
An Israeli civilian was killed by a rocket fired from Gaza, according to the military. The man was killed by shrapnel from a mortar attack, according to a paramedic. Hundreds of Palestinian civilians have died in recent fighting.
"He was severely injured, treated at the scene by paramedics of Magen David Adom and evacuated to Barzilay Hospital in Ashkelon where they unfortunately had to pronounce his death," said Uri Shacham, paramedic.
The man was said to be working near the Erez border crossing when the mortar hit.
Hamas, the Islamist group that rules Gaza, claimed responsibility for the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke shortly after the man's death, saying the Israeli military will use "great force" against Hamas for rejecting a ceasefire proposed late yesterday.
