Needed 10-digit dialing in 812 area code put off

State regulators have indefinitely pushed back the start of mandatory 10-digit dialing in southern Indiana's 812 area code.

The required full-number dialing was scheduled to start Sept. 6, but the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission announced Thursday it was being delayed because some groups said they weren't ready for the change.

The agency says business owners, medical professionals and law enforcement agencies were among those who expressed a need for more time. The commission had asked people in February to start using all 10 digits when dialing 812 area code numbers.

Agency spokeswoman Natalie Derrickson tells the Evansville Courier & Press that the new, overlaid 930 area code is still due to be added to the region despite the delay.
