The mayor of South Bend says he's being deployed to Afghanistan for seven months next year.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg says he will serve as an intelligence officer with the Naval Reserve from Feb. 28 to Sept. 30, 2014.

The South Bend Tribune and WSBT-TV report the 31-year-old Buttigieg was commissioned as an officer in 2009 and holds the rank of lieutenant junior grade.

Like most members of the military Reserve and National Guard, Buttigieg spends one weekend each month training or drilling. He also performs a two-week tour of duty each year.

Buttigieg says city Controller Mark Neal will serve as deputy mayor in charge of the city while he is deployed.
