Someone mysteriously replaced two American flags on the Brooklyn Bridge with white flags Tuesday.

They were fluttering from poles perched on the stone supports that hold cables above the bridge. Police removed both flags before noon.

At last check, police did not know what time they were placed there, or by whom. They said they're looking into it.

A city employee told NBC New York the flags were 12 feet by 18 feet in size. The employee estimated it could take up to two hours to take a flag down from the bridge and raise another up. The flags and police activity created traffic delays on the bridge and FDR Drive.

The city's Department of Transportation had no immediate comment.
