A mother and son are in the hospital Saturday after they were both shot and their house caught fire.

Officials tell Eyewitness News Shanna Ford, 43, and her son Zachary Joseph, 23, were in their home on the northeast side near 38th Street and Forest Manor when they heard a crackling sound outside. The mother and son went outside to take a look at what investigators believe was the sound of their house on fire.

That's when police believe someone in a passing vehicle opened fire, hitting both the mother and son.

Family members say before pulling the trigger, the shooting suspect asked for Shanna's husband, who was not home at the time.

Ford and Joseph were both taken to Wishard Hospital where as of Saturday afternoon, Ford was listed in good condition and Joseph in fair condition.

Police have not released a motive for the shooting and while the fire is considered suspicious, an arson investigation will take several days to complete.

Investigators are requesting that anyone with information regarding this incident to call IMPD or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS (8477).
