Mother, daughter stabbed to death in Monticello

David Rodenbarger

Counselors are helping students at Woodlawn Elementary School in White County cope with the murder of a classmate.

Indiana State Police say 20-year-old David Rodenbarger stabbed to death his mother, 41-year-old Michelle "Shelly" Haskins, and his half-sister seven-year-old Jillian "Jilly" Haskins early Saturday morning. It happened at their home on East Richey Park near the Tippecanoe River in Monticello.

The mother was able to call 911 before she died from her injuries. The little girl, who attended Woodlawn Elementary, died at the hospital.

David Rodenbarger was arrested at the murder scene. He's being held at the White County Jail. Formal charges have not yet been filed. The prosecutor's office is awaiting the results of the police investigation.

Michelle Haskins graduated from Twin Lakes High School in Monticello in 1990 and lived in Burnettsville her entire life. Her obituary says her family was "her life and world."

State Police say the case is still under investigation. Right now they believe they may have a motive, but they are not releasing those details yet.
