An investigation is underway into a deadly moped accident in South Bend overnight.

Rescuers responded to a call around 12:20 Sunday morning for the crash involving a pickup truck and a moped carrying driver Quentin Freeman, 53, and passenger Adrienne Gentry, 56.

The truck struck the moped at Franklin and Calvert, but did not stop, according to police. The moped was dragged several blocks to Franklin and Donald Streets. Freeman died at the scene; Gentry was hurt but is expected to be okay.

There were no witnesses to the accident but several heard it from their house.

"It was like nothing I've ever heard before," said Antonio Page, a witness who heard the crash. "It was like a car getting crushed."

"The crash itself was loud," added James Booker. "We heard it over the music while we were upstairs and there were at least 10 people inside."

Police are looking for an older model, two-toned red Ford F-150. It may also have a height modification and lift kit.

The South Bend Police Department asks anyone who may have knowledge of the crash to contact Lt. Eugene Eyster at (574) 235-9818 or contact Crime Stoppers at 288-STOP.
