The Mooresville Pioneers got an early start on high school football practice.

Monday is the first official day high school football teams can practice. The Pioneers hit the field when the clock struck midnight.

The late night practice is an annual tradition at Mooresville. Parents are invited to watch as the players get some practice time under the lights. Head coach Chad Dockery says the midnight practice is not only good for getting his team ready for Friday nights, but it shows the players the community supports them.

"You know, tonight's exciting. We talked to them in the locker room before we came out, several kids felt like they're almost goosebumps, they're tickled to death to be out here, they can't wait, biting at the bit to get after it and they have a lot of fun," Dockery said. "This is a fun night, we get a lot of the people from the community come out and support us, the administration, it's a good night all around."

The balanced schedule many schools have adopted mean the end of two-a-day practices in most districts. Classes in Mooresville begin Tuesday.

The season kicks off in three weeks. Watch all the highlights Friday nights on Operation Football with Dave Calabro and get scores, news and videos on the Operation Football app for your smartphone.
