Police in northwest Indiana say a man who drove into a building in the morning was hit by a train later that night.
The News-Dispatch reports 26-year-old Carlos Cooper Jr. of Michigan City was injured by an Amtrak train while walking along the track Thursday night, less than 15 hours after police found Cooper's truck had run into a restaurant.
Cooper told police he was avoiding a pothole and lost control of his vehicle.
Witnesses later told police that Cooper was apparently talking on a cellphone when he was struck from behind by a train and thrown off the tracks about 5:30 p.m. The train's warning lights were on and its horn was sounding.
Cooper was flown to a South Bend hospital, which didn't immediately release his condition.
