Indianapolis - Mayor Greg Ballard says he opposes the Republican-backed proposed amendment to the state constitution that would limit marriage to a man and a woman.

A group of people opposing the proposed amendment because it would ban civil unions rallied against it at the Statehouse Monday.

The mayor says the proposal doesn't make sense.

"It's already against the law so I'm not sure why they're trying to do that. The businesses, they don't like it, and I'm about jobs and I'd like to see people or businesses hire the best quality people they can so I'm not sure what the point of that is," said the mayor.

The mayor has also come out against the proposed immigration bill. A rally was held at the Statehouse opposing two immigration-related bills.
