Mayor Ballard closes City-County government Tuesday
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard has closed the City-County government on Tuesday and issued a two-hour delay for Wednesday due to extreme cold temperatures.
Essential employees are expected to report to work Tuesday.
The sheriff's department will again deploy officers to help move people from their houses should they run out of heat. Emergency shelters are available, as well.
Ballard says the important thing is to get people out of the cold.
"We want residents to check on neighbors, especially the elderly and disabled. Pet owners need to be checking on their animals. It is very important, because this is getting down into temperatures again which can be very, very deadly. Trash pick-up is now suspended through Wednesday because of the dangerous cold," the mayor said.
Ballard also announced Monday afternoon that Marion County remains under an orange-level travel advisory, but that IndyGo bus service will operate as normal.
Most of central Indiana remains under a Wind Chill Warning until noon Wednesday, with wind chill temperatures reaching as low as -35 degrees.
The city has opened four warming stations to help protect residents from the bitter cold. The stations are located at the following parks:
Broad Ripple Park
1550 Broad Ripple Ave.
9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
605 S. High School Rd.

2345 Pagoda Dr.
10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
4200 English Ave.

The City of Anderson has also opened warming shelters for residents on Monday and Tuesday. The City of Anderson Transit Services (CATS) bus service is also offering free services during the cold.
"We don't want to see anyone walking in these conditions," said Sam Pellegrino, director of CATS. "Our biggest concern is safety, so we want to provide an opportunity for everyone to get where they are going safely."
The warming stations can be found at the following locations:
