Mayor Ballard apologizes for fatal crash

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard

Indianapolis (AP) - Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard has apologized in handwritten letters sent to the family of a motorcyclist killed when he was struck by an Indianapolis Police cruiser.
Ballard says in a letter sent to the wife of 30-year-old crash victim Eric Wells that an independent review by the FBI will help city officials understand what happened at the scene of the Aug. 6 crash.
Indianapolis Police officials have faced criticism since prosecutors dropped drunken driving charges against officer David Bisard because a blood test wasn't performed properly. He still
faces reckless homicide and other charges for the crash that injured two other motorcyclists.
Wells' family released the letter, and Aaron Wells told the Indianapolis Star that it was thoughtful of Ballard to write the letter in response to his son's death.
