A northeastern Indiana company hopes to break a record by creating a massive popcorn ball to serve as the centerpiece at this year's Indiana State Fair.

This is the Year of Popcorn at the fair, and officials decided to create a popcorn ball exceeding 5,000 pounds.

The News Sun reports the fair turned to Topeka's Snax In Pax to fulfill that mission.

The LaGrange County company has begun working on the ball using a mold that is eight feet across. Work is being done in stages, and the finishing touches will be placed on the ball once it's shipped to Indianapolis.

This year's fair opens Aug. 2. The popcorn ball will be unveiled on Aug. 3.
