Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday free events and closings

Today marks Dr. Martin Luther King junior's birthday, which means many government offices and schools are closed today.  But there are some places open today and offering free admission to commemorate the holiday.

Every attraction at White River State Park is free today. That includes the Eiteljorg Museum, Indiana State Museum and IMAX Theater, the Indianapolis Zoo, NCAA Hall of Champions and Victory Field.

There is just one catch, each person needs to bring a canned food donation for each attraction. Gleaner's Food Bank benefits. 

In addition to the attractions along White River, there is plenty of other free fun around the city on MLK Day, including the Children's Museum. Admission there free from 10:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m. 

In addition to the wonders and history normally on display there, the museum will include plenty of special activities to celebrate the life, achievements and legacy of Dr. King.

White River State Park

What: Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Celebration. Free day at the park.

Highlights: Blood drive, presentation of "Tragedy, Trains, Truth & Tales," a musical about the life of Harriet Tubman, at Indiana State Museum. Visitors also can view copies of the Emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment. Along with health screenings at Victory Field from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. each person will receive two free tickets to the Indians' Opening Day on April 4.
Cost: Free admission to all park attractions, including the Indiana State Museum, Eiteljorg Museum, Indianapolis Zoo, IMAX Theater and NCAA Hall of Champions, if you bring a can of food to donate. Visitors also will receive free parking.

The Madame Walker Theatre Center

What: Indianapolis Urban League Freedom March

When: Jan. 21.

Highlights: 9:30 a.m., free community breakfast at the Indianapolis Urban League, 777 Indiana Ave.; 10:30 a.m., Freedom Walk from Urban League to Madame Walker Theatre Center; 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Program.

Indianapolis Museum of Art

What: Arts and craft activities.

Where: Pulliam Family Great Hall, 4000 Michigan Road.

When: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 21.

Highlights: Visit the exhibition "An American Legacy: Norell, Blass, Halston and Sprouse," then help design a large-scale community weaving using colorful threads and found objects. Other art-making activities available in Star Studio and African Activity Space.

Rhythm! Discovery Center

Mail Delivery: No regular mail service or collection Monday. All branches will be closed. Regular service will resume Tuesday.

Schools: Most will be closed. Check with school district for schedule.

IndyGo: On Monday, buses will run on a Saturday schedule. The customer service center is open. Open Door routes will operate on a regular weekday schedule.

Library: All Indianapolis Public Library locations will be closed Monday except the InfoZone, located in the Children's Museum of Indianapolis which is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
