Military officials say a Marine lance corporal based at Camp Lejeune has died in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense announced Monday that 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Hunter D. Hogan of Norman, Ind., died June 23 while conducting combat operations in Helmand province.

Hogan was assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune.

Hogan was from the Jackson County community of Norman and a 2009 graduate of Brownstown Central High School.

A friend of Hogans, Chase Plumer, tells The Tribune of Seymour that Hogan started saying when they were high school sophomores that he would join the Marines. Plumer says his friend insisted on signing up for the infantry even with the war continuing in Afghanistan.

Plumer says Hogan also was a rodeo rider as they were growing up.
