A man is in critical condition but is expected to survive after being shot during an early morning carjacking.

It happened at the BP station at 38th Street and Illinois just before 4:00 am Wednesday morning. Police say a man was pumping gas when he was approached by unidentified people. Officers say the victim was shot twice in the abdomen and the shooter or shooters took his car.

The victim was rushed to surgery at IU Health-Methodist Hospital. Police have not released the victim's name.

Police say the 1977 blue Buick Electra two-door with a two-tone roof with spinners and a lift package was found burned shortly after someone took its wheels off. They found it in the 2700 block of Stewart Street.

Investigators say the wheels are valued at $5,000.
