Westfield Police have confirmed that the driver of a Jeep that went into a retention pond Saturday night has died.  Alexander Cottom, 22, of Noblesville was pulled from the Jeep after he drove into a retention pond at the Sandpiper Lakes subdivision and could not be revived.

It happened around 8:19 pm near State Road 32 and Sanibel Circle.

Witnesses told police they saw a white SUV come into the neighborhood, then a few moments later, make a sharp turn into the pond. They also said they didn't see anyone get out before the SUV became fully submerged in the water.

Cottom was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital but was pronounced dead a short time later.

There are no indications of foul play. It is still unclear what caused Cottom to drive into the retention pond.

The incident is still under investigation by the Westfield Police Department.
