A man on trial for killing his two-year-old son has pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the charge.

Micah Harrison of Alabama was staying with relatives in Noblesville in January 2013 when he stabbed his young son to death in front of his grandmother. He begged the judge to kill him.

Harrison's trial was still in the jury selection phase when he entered the plea. Harrison was alleging an insanity defense, and faced the possibility of being sentenced to life without parole.

Under the plea agreement, Harrison will be sentenced to 55 years in prison. Sentencing is set for March 26, 2014.

Harrison has remained at the Hamilton County Jail since his arrest.
