Rescuers located and pulled a man from the pond near the Eagle Creek Court apartments early Monday morning after witnesses reported him calling for help late Sunday night.  The man, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters responded to the scene, just off Cunningham Road, shortly after callers reported a man calling for help around 11:00 p.m. Sunday night.  But the darkness, depth of the water and surrounding brush hindered rescue efforts, according to Speedway Fire Chief Everett Cheney.

Using sonar to pinpoint the area, divers entered the water and found the man, described as in his thirties by officials, around 1:00 a.m. Monday.  They say the man was found approximately ten feet from shore in water ten feet deep.

An investigation is underway to determine why the man was in water not meant for swimming.
