Indianapolis Metro Police have arrested a 32-year-old man in connection with a rape outside a Walgreens pharmacy earlier this month.

Police arrested Dwayne Washington of Indianapolis on an outstanding warrant. North District officers thought they recognized him from information broadcast regarding the Walgreens incident.

Detectives questioned and subsequently arrested Washington for rape, criminal deviate conduct, and criminal confinement.

The alleged incident took place in a parking lot attack in a busy shopping area near several north side neighborhoods.

A woman told police she was sexually assaulted outside the Walgreens store at East 86th Street and Westfield Boulevard in Nora.

She told police them she was attacked in the parking lot outside the Walgreens where she works. She said she was on break when a man raped her inside her car just before midnight Thursday.

"What she told officers is, she was on a break in her unlocked car. An unidentified man came up and asked for a cigarette. She thought he had left. She then turned around and he was still there. He entered the unlocked car and a sexual assault apparently occurred," explained IMPD Officer Kendale Adams.

According to police, IMPD has stepped up patrols in the area, but said they weren't worried for others' safety.

"I don't think we have a serial rapist on our hands at this point in time. There are no nexus of crimes in that area that would lead our detectives to believe that," Adams added.

Still, police warned - women especially - that it's never a good idea to be alone in a parking lot at night, no matter how well lit.

Should the unthinkable happen though, "You can scream. You can yell. You can blow a whistle. You can blow your horn. You know, these are things that draw people's attention to something that's going on," said Adams.
