Madison Regatta officials expect race to return
Organizers of the Madison Regatta in southeastern Indiana say they expect the annual hydroplane races to return next year in the wake of their first-ever cancellation.
Regatta officials are still reviewing where the organizing group stands financially after the first cancellation of the Governor's Cup race in its 63-year history. The Fourth of July event was canceled after high waters along the Ohio River filled the course with floating debris and created unsafe racing conditions.
But outgoing Madison Regatta treasurer Jeff Chandler tells The Madison Courier he expects the event "to come out by the skin of our teeth" and return in 2014.
He says the Regatta is still owed about $10,000 and the group will be in good shape once it's paid that money.
