Logansport woman dies in Cass County crash

Walton Deputy Town Marshal Jeffery Packard was involved in a separate crash on his way to the fatal crash.

A 61-year-old woman from Logansport died in a single-vehicle crash in rural Cass County on Wednesday morning.

An officer on the way to the scene got into a crash, resulting in injuries to the officer and the other driver.

Indiana State Police say Mara Petty may have had a medical problem just before the crash, which occurred around 9:30 am on County Road 950 East south of Church Road in New Waverly. Petty drover her Pontiac over a set of railroad tracks and into a ditch on the west side of County Road 950 East. The Pontiac rolled onto its top after traveling into the ditch.

Petty was pronounced dead at the scene by Cass County Coroner Randy Rozzi.

Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor.

Walton Deputy Town Marshal Jeffery Packard was on his way to the fatal crash when he was involved in a separate crash. That second crash happened on Logansport Road at Cass County Road 1100 East.

Officer Packard was driving a semi-marked 2010 Dodge Charger police car, with emergency lights activated, southbound on County Road 1100 East.

According to police reports, Packard did not yield to cross traffic at the intersection of Logansport Road and was struck by a westbound 1999 Saturn driven by Jeremy Hendricks, 30, of Peru.

Packard and Hendricks were transported by ambulance to Dukes Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
