Lightning strike sparks fire at Zionsville High School
Classes are going on as scheduled Wednesday at Zionsville High School after an early morning fire damaged a building on the school's campus.
The Zionsville Fire Department says a lightning strike sparked the fire on the roof of the "Team Building," which occurred just after 4:00 am as strong storms moved through central Indiana.
Zionsville Fire Marshal Joshua Frost tells Eyewitness News the fire was first reported at 4:09 Wednesday morning. Crews arrived within three minutes to find heavy smoke and flames in the attic area of the locker room facility at the athletic complex.
The building is on the Zionsville High School campus at 1000 Mulberry Street. It took firefighters about an hour and a half to get the fire under control.
No one was inside the building at the time of the fire, and there were no injuries reported. Firefighters estimate around $200,000 in damage.
Agencies assisting on the scene were Whitestown Fire Department, Carmel Fire Department and Zionsville Police Department. Pike Township Fire Department provided fill-in coverage at Zionsville Fire Station 91.
