Lightning strikes are being blamed for 2 deaths in Gary and several fires across Indiana.

The Merrillville Post-Tribune and WGN-TV reported a man working on a Gary billboard died at a hospital after being struck by lightning Thursday. The man's name was not immediately released.

WGN also reports a house fire believed caused by a lightning strike killed a second man and injured a child. Gary Fire Department Chief of Operations Mark Jones told WGN that firefighters found a 42-year-old man and a 9-month-old child in the house. The man died and the child was airlifted to Comer Children's Hospital in Chicago. Their names were being withheld pending notification of relatives.

Lightning strikes also were suspected in fires in Plymouth, and in Carmel and Elwood in central Indiana.
