Less than three weeks before US 31 shuts down for construction in Carmel
We're just 3 weeks away from a major construction zone that will close down a portion of US 31 in Carmel for several months.
The is all a part of a plan to eliminate congestion on one of the most traveled roads in the state and reduce the travel time from Indianapolis to South Bend by half an hour.
But in the meantime it's going to cause a lot of headaches for area businesses.
The work to prepare for the project is already underway.
Contractors closed Main Street on both sides of US 31. The closure stretches to Illinois Street on the west and Pennsylvania Street on the east.
Access to and from US 31 will be restricted through the fall.
The closure of US 31 between Old Meridian and 136st streets will begin around April 4 to turn the roadway into a limited access highway.
There are two open houses to discuss construction progress and the road closures. Both are open to the public from 5:30 to 8pm with a presentation at 6pm.
The first is Tuesday night at Carmel High School's cafeteria on 520 E. Main St.
The second is Wednesday at Westfield Middle School's Cafeteria at 345 W. Hoover St.
