LAWRENCE, Ind. (WTHR) – The Lawrence Police and Fire departments had fun for a good cause this weekend.

As part of Community Safety Day, firefighters and police officers competed in a chicken wing eating contest.

The firefighters won, but they say the fundraiser was more about helping others.

All money raised benefits the Susan Jordan Legacy Fund and the Lawrence Township School Foundation.

"Really the winner today is the charities this went to,” explained Fire Chief Dino Batalis. “Police and fire were just the mechanics of it. We're always jabbing each other, but the winner is everybody today.”

Firefighters thought this would be a small event when they started it last year. But they got quite a crowd of more than 500 people to turn out to watch them Saturday.
