Lawrence Police officer stops armed robbery

An armed robber picked a bad time to hold up a Lawrence convenience store.

Just as he was walking out of the Rickers on East 56th Street carrying the drawer from a cash register, a Lawrence police officer walked in.

Officer Daniel Rhoton pulled his gun, and just outside the front door, the officer was able to get the suspect down on the ground to handcuff and arrest him.

Police say the suspect, identified as Hliafi Derricott, 26, was buying three packs of cigarettes when he pulled out a .38 Special Smith and Wesson. Derricott allegedly pointed the loaded handgun at the clerk and demanded the cash register drawer.

Derricott faces charges including armed robbery, carrying a handgun without a license, criminal recklessness and pointing a firearm. Derricott was also wanted through Marion County for carrying a handgun without a license.
