Lawrence PD raising money for trauma kits

Another Marion County police department is now raising money to equip all their officers with life-saving trauma kits.

Earlier this week, volunteers put together the kits to give to all the Indianapolis Metro police officers. The kits contain tourniquets, airway openers, bandages and other items that can quickly treat gunshot wounds and other injuries.

Lawrence police are now the only officers in Marion County who don't have these kits in all cruisers, and they are working to change that.

"Going back a year ago, we laid off all our EMT's," said Sgt. Tom Ashcraft, president of the Lawrence FOP Lodge. "We're the first responders; We're there first and so we really need to be there. We need these kits."

Lawrence needs to raise $7,000 for 70 kits to give to all regular and reserve officers. A local business is offering to match donations up to $3,500.
