Lawmakers query Ball State on intelligent design

Four conservative Indiana legislators are questioning Ball State University's decision to prohibit the teaching of intelligent design in a science course.

The legislators have sent a letter to Ball State president Jo Ann Gora, saying her decision last summer raised questions about whether the school had violated the religious and academic freedoms of the professor involved.

The Star Press reports the letter is from Republican Sens. Dennis Kruse of Auburn, Travis Holdman of Markle and Greg Walker of Columbus and GOP Rep. Jeff Thompson of Lizton. It says they might seek legislative action.

Ball State spokesman Tony Proudfoot says the physics professor who faced complaints of teaching creationism remains an important and valued faculty member.
