Eyewitness News got a sneak peek of the new Larry Bird bronze statue.

Our camera was there as the statue was being installed Monday at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. It weighs nearly 2,000 pounds and hoisting it in place proved to be a big job.

Artist Bill Wolfe poured over pictures to create the likeness. The $153,000 statue took him four months to build. He says an old rivalry with Magic Johnson factored into the size.

"I knew that Magic's statue at Michigan State was 12 feet tall, so I wanted to make sure that Larry's was taller so I made him 15 feet!" said Bill Wolfe, sculptor.

Wolfe says he has never met Larry Bird and he's anxious to see Bird's reaction to the art. When the installation is complete, the statue will be draped until an unveiling Tuesday morning at 11:00 am at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The statue will be at the Fieldhouse to mark Pacer's opening night Tuesday, and then it's on the move again to Indiana State University, where it will be on display outside the Hulman Center.

The dedication celebration kicks off next weekend.
