The fund is set to expire next year.

"We need it to be reauthorized, otherwise someone will take that money and spend it on their own pet project," Jewell said. "This fund has helped communities across the country. Nearly every single county has benefited."

The fund, which paid for a park in Carmel, has been around for 50 years.

It does not use tax payer money, instead, it is funded by a portion of federal oil and gas leases.
