Lafayette group donates bears for troubled kids

A Lafayette sewing group is creating clothes for toy bears that Tippecanoe County sheriff's deputies will hand out to children who have been traumatized by neglect, abuse, or events such as house fires.

American Sewing Guild Lafayette chapter member Betsey Cederquist tells The Journal & Courier she came up with the idea last year after she bought 24 toy bears at a garage sale. She then bought 36 more.

The group has dressed about half of the bears in handmade sweaters, dresses and other outfits.

Deputies in the county northwest of Indianapolis will keep the bears in their vehicles to hand out to children enduring traumatic events.
