Lafayette foundation becomes owner of golf course

A north-central Indiana developer has donated an 18-hole golf course to the Lafayette Parks Foundation, which will operate and maintain the course.

Lafayette Parks superintendent Ted Bumbleburg tells the Journal & Courier ownership of the 146-acre Battle Ground Golf Club was transferred between Christmas and New Year's Eve. He says paperwork still needs to be worked out detailing how the course will be operated and maintained.

Lafayette developer John Schuemann approached the city during 2012 about his plan to donate his golf course, but the parks board could not accept it because state law bars municipalities from owning property more than seven miles outside of their boundaries.

A plan was instead drafted for the not-for-profit Parks Foundation to receive the course by creating a sub-corporation to operate it.
