Iconic Indiana department store L. S. Ayres disappeared nearly a decade ago, but its legacy lives on thanks to a book and a new exhibit opening next year.

The Indiana Historical Society plans to open a "You Are There" exhibit featuring L. S. Ayres and the flagship downtown store which closed more than 20 years ago.

The former Ayres store at 1 West Washington St. in downtown Indianapolis now houses multiple businesses including The Oceanaire Seafood Room restaurant and a Carson Pierie Scott department store.

The IHS exhibit is expected to feature parts of the downtown store as well as the Ayr-Way discount store chain.

The exhibit comes after the IHS publication of the book "L. S. Ayres & Company: The Store At The Crossroads of America" written by Ken Turchi.

The parent company of L. S. Ayres was purchased by Macy's in 2006 at which point the remaining stores were closed or renamed Macy's.

The "You Are There" exhibit is expected to open in March of 2015.

In the meantime historians are looking to interview people associated with the store to help shape the exhibit.
