Kelly sees progress in Notre Dame's ugly victory

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly believes the 22nd-ranked Fighting Irish showed signs against Michigan State of the defense resembling the squad that was so dominant last season.

Kelly said during a teleconference Sunday following Notre Dame's 17-13 victory over the Spartans that the Irish played better along the defensive line, among the linebackers and more physical play overall.

He says the biggest improvement, though, was the Irish focused on doing their jobs and not trying to do the jobs of others. He says that was a point the coaches stressed heading into the game. He says the coaches expected more from the players and got it as the Irish defense held the Spartans to 254 yards total offense.

Notre Dame's next opponent is No. 14 Oklahoma (3-0).
