A judge says a Lafayette man can't withdraw his guilty plea to a murder charge in a beating death.

The Journal & Courier reports Tippecanoe Superior Court Judge Randy Williams denied Darren Englert's request Thursday.

The 21-year-old Englert pleaded guilty in March in connection with the July 2011 beating death of 26-year-old Jeremy Gibson. He mailed a handwritten request from the Tippecanoe County Jail last week saying he wasn't "of sound mind" when he entered the plea in March and that his attorneys had misled him.

Englert didn't have a plea agreement and still faces additional charges including conspiracy to commit murder, criminal confinement and fraud. He's due to stand trial on those charges in November.

He's one of three people who were charged in the case.
