A North Vernon man is under arrest after police say he critically injured an 18-month-old girl.

Jennings County Sheriff's deputies arrested Ryan James Shelley, 27, on preliminary charges of felony aggravated battery with serious injury and felony neglect. More charges are expected.

Shelley told police he was watching his girlfriend's children when the 18-month-old fell off the kitchen counter. First responders began CPR on the child and she was airlifted to a Louisville hospital.

Doctors say the child's injuries were not consistent with a fall, and that the injuries indicate that the girl had been shaken forcefully. She remains in the critical intensive care unit on full life support.

When deputies arrived at Shelley's home, they found him hiding in the closet of a rear bedroom. He was taken into custody without incident.

Shelley admitted lying about the girl falling off the counter and that he had shaken her because she would not stop crying. He is being held at the Jennings County Jail pending formal charges.
