IU student killed, another injured in weekend crash on I-65
An Indiana University student died and another had life-threatening injuries in a weekend crash in northern Indiana.
The crash happened Saturday night along I-65 near Remington in Jasper County.
Police say the students were on their way home when their SUV blew a tire.
20-year-old John Malone Junior from River Forest, Illinois was killed.
His high school basketball coach said Malone was the kind of person always looking to help others first.
"He made his mark in the world the short time he was with us. We cherish his memory and always hold him in our hearts," said John Quinn.
One of the other injured students suffered life-threatening injuries and is in fair condition.
Police say alcohol or drugs were not factors in that crash.
Second fatal crash
An hour later, another deadly crash happened in the backup along I-65.
Indiana State Police say a driver trying to avoid the stopped traffic lost control and hit the vehicle driven by 21-year-old IU student Christin Gelinas of Valparaiso.
That caused Gelinas to lose control and roll her vehicle.
Her mother, Melissa Gelinas, died in that crash.
